Merry Christmas gang!
So, rather than you people think I’ve disappeared and am not making comics anymore, I’m just popping in to let you guys know what’s going on.
A lot of stuff is going on at the day job and it’s demanding more of me physically and mentally. So that means less desired time to put into making the comic.
As I mentioned in item 1, I have less energy for making the comic, and rather than cobble together some garbage pages like I had done in a few of the previous posts, I figured you people would appreciate a well crafted good looking well paced page. Page 174 is trash, and if I had more time and energy 175 would’ve been colored with a lot more attention to detail. I’m actually quite fond of 175.
Where does that leave us? I don’t know right now. I haven’t stopped working on William Feist. I’ve just been working on it at a slower pace. Having a talk with a co worker, he mentioned that you’re only as good as your last piece of work. My last few pieces of work aren’t good and I feel that I’m better than them. So I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing. working on stronger layouts, better overall artwork and great pacing. I can’t imagine waiting weeks and having a 2 panel page pop up. It would infuriate me. I think my plan will be to finish out the issue and then post them 5 times a week. I cared so much about page views and spent hours reading up on the craft of webcomics. Getting people to come back, and all the little tricks and things other creators do, but honestly page views don’t mean anything to me anymore. Nor do facebook likes or being circled in google+. I just want to make a good comic and share it with people. I want you to follow us on social media not to inflate my stupid ego, but so that you know new stuff is posted for you.
In the end my goal is to have you guys holding completely colored finished copies of William Feist TPBs in your hands. It’s another thing I’ve focused on, but honestly I don’t have the time energy or know how to even put it together. It’s something I want to learn and I want it to be great.
Last but not least. I’m also working on my other piece of the crossover with Barry Linck’s Phineus. With the energy I have left from work I had to put it on the back burner to get Feist pages out, but with the current schedule being what it is I figure I shouldn’t put it off any longer. Also it’s fun as hell to draw Barry’s characters. So gang until next time. read Phineus, read The errant apprentice. Those guys put in a lot of time and care into their books and they’re always here delivering goodness on a daily. Riot and I are the shifty ones who disappear in the thick of the night. Search us out on Facebook, @kingvmr @calvinwalvin for twitter updates, and WilliamFeist is on google+ so pick one and follow.
All the best gang,
Sorry gang. I’ve been struggling with Wednesday’s page and in the process totally forgot about Today’s page until Sunday. So I will be posting it tomorrow. My lady also came to visit so that means I drop a lot of things to spend time with her. She also let me work on the page, but I realized I wasn’t going to get it done in time for you so I figure an extra day won’t hurt too much. Again I apologize. Till tomorrow.
A lot of people have been crying lately about things they know and love being destroyed or ruined. Be it comic books or video games or movies or TV; someone is always complaining about their favorite things being ruined.
I’m here to tell you it’s not them it’s you.
Companies will do what they do. They create products to make money, and that’s it. Certainly the people they get to create the products are in it for the love of it but in the end it’s about the almighty dollar. It’s on you to find things that are good, and cherish them while you can because inevitably when it gets popular, everything you liked about it will be ruined. When the mainstream gets involved things get watered down. It’s an eventuality that we can’t fight.
I loved The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when I was a kid, but I wasn’t reading Eastman and Laird’s turtles. Yet when I heard about Michael Bay Re-imagining the turtles I was angry. I felt like ” What gives that shit head the right?!”
I’m sure that before me there were guys sitting in comic shops just talking about how much the turtles are being ruined with their commercialization. How the turtles will be changed forever and ruined. The 90’s must have been rough for those guys. Guys who lived and died with the turtles only to see them whored out for toys video games and movies that totally ignored everything the turtles were.
I’m here to tell you. Move on or suffer. As you get older your tastes change and the things they created for you at one time are no longer created for you.
I can’t tell you how many message board posts I’ve read of people complaining about what Resident Evil 6 isn’t instead of what it is. It does just about what every other game with guns out there does and yet some how since it has the name Resident Evil it’s not allowed to grow at all, and has garnered tons of negative reviews. People come in with their preconceived notions of what they think it should be and I’m here to tell you that regardless of what it is when you do that you will most certainly be let down. You’ve hyped up something so big in your mind you can only be let down by it.
Final Fantasy has seen nasty scrutiny for it’s various places, the most coming from it’s hardcore “fans”. They’ve complained on countless occasions about how the series has been changed forever for the bad by the latest iteration of the game. Square Enix is continually bashed all over the internet, and for what? Growing as a company? Growing as developers? They created the cast of Final Fantasy 13, Lightning in particular to be like Cloud of Final Fantasy 7. Yet the cast is frequently called angst whores by the Final Fantasy diehards.
What changed here?
You changed. Final Fantasy from almost the outset has been full of angst and melodrama, but the only difference was you were young and couldn’t recognize it. You got older. Your tastes changed, and here we are thirteen years later and now you’re stomping your feet about how the creators lost sight of what made them awesome.
It wasn’t them. It was you.
It’s time to move on. There’s plenty of things out there for adults to enjoy. I’m not saying to move on to boring stuffy movies like Lincoln or act like you can tolerate Wes Anderson, but recognize that you’re not in the demographic anymore and it’s time to move on and find new things. And if you’re not going to move on, set that expectation bar low. The internet is full of complaint chatter. We don’t need anymore adding to it.
So this is the cover to Justice League issue 17. While I honestly don’t care that Superman and Wonder Woman are together, this cover struck a nerve with me. First of all Big Blue and Wondie holding hands is gross, and weird. I can deal with all the kissy face in the book, all the sharing of culture stuff. That’s fine, but this is just too weird. I can liken it to one of my friends coming over and lovingly resting his beard stubble on my face. It just un-nerves me.
Second, This is supposed to be something they’re keeping secret from the Justice League, so them standing there holding hands is just flat out wrong. I know it’s nit picking. I know I’m coming off as comic book guy but I feel like there should be some form of continuity on a comic cover.
Comic covers have always been used like yellow journalism, often over hyping what’s inside of them or using the cover to completely misdirect the reader, but that’s not the case here. This is just an odd happenstance that the continuity of the what’s happening in the universe is ignored.
Batman has used brother eye to spy on them! Here they are just standing there giving the whole thing away. The worst part is that no one in editorial looked at this and went….”Eh..I don’t know about this hand holding thing here.”
All in all these second covers have been looking good. I enjoy the Justice League comic as a whole, and look forward to it on a monthly basis.
Till next time kids.
This is hilarious. I’m not sure if it’s indicative of society or not, but it’s definitely funny.
